Dear Teachers,
Coral Bells - Mathematics is an all new number book designed with a view to cater to the needs of young learners in the
early stages of learning. The book focuses on all the basic mathematical skills that learners need to develop from a young

age. The concepts have been presented and reinforced through interesting activities in order to make the learning of maths
            afun-filledexperience.
            Teaching of Basic Mathematical Concepts
                1. Sameand Different
To begin doing maths, learners need to be able to differentiate between things that are the same and things that are
different. The concept of same and different is useful later to learn concepts of sorting, grouping and classifying

                    objects.
It is also one of the basic building blocks of maths and the child should be very clear about this concept before
                    movingon.
                    ActivitiesSuggested
                * Same and different can be taught by classifying objects or sorting. Things can be classified on the basis of shape,
colour and size or the type. This can be done with the help of pictures or by going outside and getting the learners

                    toobserveleaves,flowers,andotherobjectsaroundthem,thentalkabouthow theyaresameor different.
                2. Sorting,Classifying and Grouping
Sorting and classifying objects teaches children about attributes and relationships and also promotes logical and
analytical thinking. Knowing this concept helps learners to learn the art of organizing things in the real world.A
solid foundation in these concepts is a prerequisite for all mathematical operations. So these fundamental skills

                    mustbetaughtandreinforcedfromayoung age.
                    ActivitiesSuggested
                * Learners may be asked to sort objects based on colour, size or shape (buttons, thread, rings, spoons, plates,
                    leaves,seedsetc.).
                *   Pictureworksheetscanalsobeusedfor reinforcingtheconcepts.
                3. Bigand Small/Little
Teaching the concept of big and small helps children to compare, sort and classify by size in later maths
activities. It also helps learners know how to compare and contrast things in daily life. This concept forms the

basis of the most important mathematical operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and it
