Large amounts of goods, including heavy
equipment, vehicles, trucks, and oil, are
transported between countries by cargo
ships. Water transportation thus serves as
an important mode of transportation for
international trade. Cargo ship carrying goods
India has a vast coastline and several major sea
ports including Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Kochi,
and Vishakapatnam. These ports serve as harbours
for ships travelling to other countries for trade.
Seaport
Did You
Know? A large boat used to transport cargo, people, or goods across
seas, oceans, and navigable waterways is called a shipping
vessel. Shipping vessels include passenger, cargo, and container
ships as well as oil tankers.
Air Transport
Air transport is the fastest and the most expensive
means of travelling. It reduces our travelling time
from days to a few hours. We can travel long distances in just a few hours across
cities, states, and nations by aeroplanes.
In times of emergencies or natural disasters, air
transport is quite helpful. In these situations, food
and medication are dropped from aircrafts and
helicopters, and people are evacuated.
Aeroplanes that fly within different states of
a country are called domestic airlines. Those
connecting different countries are called
international airlines.
