The young men were surprised to hear this. Then
the king continued, “I am going to give each of you
a seed today. I want you to plant the seed, water it
and come back here after one year with what you
have grown from the seed.
How much time was given by
I will look at the plants the king to the young men to
that you bring and the one come back with their plant?
who brings the best plant
will be the next king.”
A young man named Dharma was there that day
and he like the other young men received a seed.
He went home and told his mother about it. She
helped him sow the seed in a pot. Dharma watered
it every day and waited for the seed to grow.
After about two weeks, the other young men began
to talk about the new plants that were beginning
to grow from the seeds they had got.
Dharma waited and waited but nothing ever
grew in his pot. Six weeks went by. Still nothing
happened. Six months went by, but there was no
plant in Dharma’s pot.
All his friends had big plants. Dharma did not tell them about his
seed. He just kept waiting for his seed to grow.
A year later, all the young men took their plants to the
king’s palace. Dharma went there with his empty pot.
He was amazed to see the great variety of plants
that his friends had grown from the seeds.
Dharma put his empty pot on the floor. Some
of the young men laughed at him and some of
them felt sorry for him.
The king arrived and greeted all the young men.
