A. Types of Sentences
A sentence is a group of words that makes complete sense. Based on the meaning they
convey, we can classify sentences into four kinds:
• Assertive sentences which can be affirmative or negative statements.
Examples: She goes to school. (affirmative)
She doesn’t go to school. (negative)
• Interrogative sentences which ask questions.
Examples: Does she go to school?
Where did she go?
• Imperative sentences which give instructions and orders or make requests.
Examples: Please pass the salt.
Stop it at once.
Open the windows.
• Exclamatory sentences express strong feelings of joy, sorrow, warning, concern
or fear.
Examples: Alas! He is no more. Help! There’s a fire.
Beware! There’s a dog here. Hurrah! We have done it.
