In a small town, there lived a poor little boy named Howard Kelly who did odd jobs to pay for
school. Sometimes, he went door to door selling things. One sunny afternoon, he was selling
some things from door to door. He was very tired and
hungry but he had only one thin dime left.
He decided to ask for a meal at the next house.
However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young
woman opened the door. Instead of a meal, he asked
her for a glass of water.
The young woman noticed that the boy looked
hungry. She went in and brought him a large glass of
milk.
“You look so tired and famished. Have this. You will
get some energy. You still have so many things to
sell,” the young woman said.
The boy drank the milk slowly. He said, “How much
do I owe you?”
“You don’t owe me anything,” she replied. “Mother
has taught us never to accept money for kindness.”
He said, “Then I thank you from the bottom of my
heart.”
