Grammar Skills
A. Active and Passive Voice
The voice of a verb expresses whether the subject in the sentence has performed or received
the action.
Verbs have two voices : Active voice and Passive voice
• When an action performed by the subject is expressed by the verb, it is in active voice.
It shows a direct relationship between the subject and the verb.
Example : Hens lay eggs.
subject verb object
Birds build nests.
subject verb object
• When the action expressed by the verb is received by the subject, it is in passive voice.
Passive voice is generally used when:
• the doer of the action is not known.
Example : My car was stolen. (We don’t know who stole it.)
• When the doer of the action is obvious.
Example : The thief was caught. (It is obvious that the police caught the thief.)
• When the focus is on the result or receiver, not on who did it.
(In newspaper reporting when subject is not important.)
Example : The elections were held yesterday.
• When processes are explained with focus on the steps and result.
Example : Some sugar is added to the mixture.
