342 Arrow-Puffin-4_Semester-1 SocialLaterite Soil Laterite soil develops as a result of leaching in areas with high temperature and rainfall. It becomes suitable for cultivation when manure is added to it. In India, this type of soil is found in Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh and Assam. Crops cultivated in this soil are cashewnut, coconut, rubber and coffee. It is also used for making bricks for construction. Mountain SoilMountain soil is also known as forest soil. This is loamy and rich in humus. This soil is very fertile. It is found on hill slopes of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh. Terrace farming is done in these areas. Wheat, maize, barley, tea, coffee and spices are grown in this type of soil. Desert or Sandy SoilDesert soil is sandy and saline. It has low moisture and humus content. It is found in the desert areas of Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana. Desert soil is not fertile. If water is made available for irrigation, crops like wheat, millets, barley, maize and pulses can be grown. Some plants which survive in desert climate are cactus and succulents.Conservation of Soil The upper fertile layer of soil gets loose due to cutting of trees. The loose layer of soil is carried away by rainwater and strong winds. This is called soil erosion. To prevent soil erosion, the following steps should be taken: %u2022 More trees should be planted, especially along hill slopes. %u2022 Fields should not be kept barren as roots of plants hold the soil and prevent erosion.%u2022 Over grazing of land should stop. %u2022 Organic and natural fertilizers should be used.
