Maria also wished that Santa Claus would leave some presents for her. She didn’t want
toys or watches. She wanted the pink frock she had seen in a shop window. When she
showed it to her mother, she only said, “Be a good girl and you will get everything you
wish for.” But Maria knew that her mother couldn’t afford it.
What did Maria wish
for?
Perhaps Santa Claus would bring her what she wanted, she thought and left a note for
Santa Claus by her bed. That night, she dreamt that Santa Claus came riding through
the snow in an open sleigh drawn by reindeers and that he entered the house at
midnight and placed a gift by her bed. “How I wish the dream came true!” Maria said
to herself as she woke up on Christmas morning. Without much hope, she looked if
there were any presents by her bed. And what a wonder! There was a box wrapped in
coloured paper. She quickly opened the box to see what was in it. She couldn’t believe
her eyes.
It was the same pink frock she had seen at the shop window! She touched the frock to
see if it was real. It was as soft as silk. And how lovely it looked!
When she took the frock out of the box a piece of paper fell out. There was something
written on it. Maria read it:
