children talked about the celebrations they were going to have at Christmas. They also
talked about the wonderful Christmas presents they were going to receive from their

          near and dear ones.

“My aunt is going to give me a gold watch,” said Ann proudly. “I am getting a Barbie

          doll, for sure,” Jessi said.

Maria looked at them sadly. She had neither rich parents nor rich aunts who could give

her expensive gifts. She was a poor girl. She lived in a small house with her mother.
Her mother worked very hard to send her to school.

Soon it was Christmas Eve. There was a Christmas tree in every house. The tree was

decorated with stars and lamps and there were gifts for all. The smell of freshly baked

cakes and cookies filled the air. But in Maria’s house, there was no Christmas tree, and
there were no cakes and cookies.

On the night before Christmas, all the children hung up stockings at the end of their
beds and went to bed early. They believed that Santa Claus would come and stuff the

          stockings with gifts.
