          A.  Verbs [was/were+verb+ -ing]

              Read the following sentences.
              •  They were walking away happily when they saw a cat.

              •  The three animals were passing by a farmyard when they saw a rooster.

                In these sentences, something happened while a longer action was going on in

              the past. This is called the past continuous tense.

              Here is another example:

                  I was reading a book when my friend came.

                                            longer action                           shorter action

                                           I was reading.

                                                       5 pm

                                                  My friend came.

                Now fill in the blanks with the past continuous tense form (was/were + verb + ing) of
