Kalam finally felt he had done something worthy, but
he knew that there was a lot more to be achieved. He
attended the Madras Institute of Technology where he
received a degree in aeronautical engineering in 1960.
After graduation, he joined DRDO (Defence Research
and Development Organization) and later ISRO (Indian
Space Research Organization).
He spent the next four decades as a scientist. He came
to be known as the ‘Missile Man’ for his contribution in
th
the field of science. He also went on to become the 11
president of India.
In the annals of Indian history, Abdul Kalam shines
as a luminary figure. He was recognised by the
government for his exceptional achievements.
The esteemed Bharat Ratna award, an
honour reserved for the nation’s most
distinguished people was bestowed on
him.
Even today, Indians fondly remember
him as the ‘People’s President.’ The
birthday of A.P.J. Abdul Kalam is
celebrated as World Students' Day on
October 15th every year.
