Reading Comprehension Passages - 1
1. IGLOOS
Read the passage and answer the questions that follow.
Have you ever wondered how people stay warm in
freezing cold places? Well, let’s take a journey to the
icy lands where igloos are more than just snow houses.
They’re cozy shelters that keep people warm. An igloo
is a dome-shaped house. The dome-shape is given to
an igloo to balance its shape. Such a shape can support
itself and remain strong even during storms.
The room of an igloo has a small hole to allow ventilation.
It has a small door and a tunnel in front of the dome
made to prevent the heat from flowing outside and to
keep the igloo warmer than the temperature outside. Sometimes blankets are hung outside igloos
to prevent the cold from reaching inside.
It is very interesting to watch the construction process of an igloo.
Compact bricks of snow are cut and then used to build a structure without using any cement. The
heat produced by humans living inside melts these snow bricks and fuses them together.
Igloos are built as temporary houses by humans. But Eskimos live permanently in igloos. They build
large igloos and live with different families close to each other connected via tunnels. Some countries
have igloo-hotels too for visitors. They are not made from snow or ice. They are glass igloos!
