Here is one of the most famous stories from Greek mythology about Pandora, believed to
be the first Greek woman created by God.
Long, long ago, there lived two brothers named Epimetheus and Prometheus in ancient
Greece, who stole fire and gave it to humans. This angered Zeus, the ruler of all the Gods.
He plotted to punish humans. He ordered Hephaestus, the God of fire and his craftsmen to
make a woman out of clay. Hephaestus created a beautiful woman, brought her to life, and
then took her to Zeus. Zeus named his lovely new daughter, Pandora. He then sent her to
Earth.
Pandora was not all beauty. Zeus gave her the flaw of being very curious.
Epimetheus was kind-hearted, gentle and
thoughtful. But he was no fool. He knew
Zeus was upto something. When he saw the
beautiful Pandora, he decided to marry her.
Epimetheus and Pandora soon got married.
Zeus gave the newly-weds a gift. It was a
wooden box securely fastened with golden
cords.
The Gods told Pandora and her husband that
they must not open the box no matter what.
Every day, Pandora looked at the box. She
wondered what might be inside. One day, she
said to herself, “What good is a magnificent box wrapped in golden thread if you can never
open it?”But then, she remembered what the Gods had told her. Days went by. But Pandora
could not stop thinking about the box.
