Ratan Tata was born in Mumbai into a Parsi Zoroastrian family
on 28 December, 1937. He was the son of Naval Tata, but was
adopted by Ratanji Tata, son of Jamshedji Tata, the founder
of the Tata Group. Ratan Tata was closer to JRD Tata than
to his father, Naval Tata. And he was particularly fond of his
grandmother, Navajbai.
Ratan Tata went to school at
Campion upto 9th standard, and
then at the Cathedral and John
Connon School, then in Bishop Cotton School in Shimla and the
Riverdale Country School in New York City where he graduated
in the year 1955. In 1959, he graduated from Cornell University
and trained as an engineer and architect. In 1962, Ratan Tata
joined the Tata Group, after working for multiple companies.
He first joined as an assistant in Tata Industries; later in the year
he spent six months training at Tata Motors.
In 1963, he moved to Tata Iron and Steel company at Jamshedpur
for a training programme. In 1970, he joined Tata Consultancy
Services, a software firm, for a short stint. He then went on to join the board of Tata Sons as
a director. He completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School in
1975.
Ratan Tata became the chairman of Tata Industries, where he took the responsibility of
transforming it into a group think tank in order to promote new ventures.
