The four conditional sentences are:
• Zero conditional sentences express general truths or known facts.
• First conditional sentences express possible future events or actions that are likely to happen.
• Second conditional sentences express unlikely or unrealistic future events.
• Third conditional sentences express hypothetical past outcomes or consequences.
Here are some examples of each type.
• Zero Conditional Sentences (truths and facts)
Examples : If you freeze water, it turns to ice.
It gets dark outside when the sun sets.
When the sun rises, it is day.
• First Conditional Sentences (possible or real condition)
Examples : If it rains, I will stay home.
If you do not water the plants, they will shrivel up and die.
If you exercise every day, you will be fit.
[In place of will, can and may are also used.]
• Second Conditional Sentences (impossible or unreal condition)
Examples : If I won the lottery, I would travel around the world.
(Chances of winning a lottery are extremely unlikely, so travelling is impossible)
If he worked hard, he would pass.
(He does not work hard, so passing is impossible.)
• Third Conditional Sentences (unfulfilled past)
Examples : If you had asked me, I would have helped you.
(You did not ask me, so I did not help you.)
If you had been careful, you would not have lost your wallet.
