Conversation Skills
Practise this conversation with your partner.
Bina : Your English is getting better by the day. What are the things
you have done to improve your communication skills?
Seema : Well, I have been practising active listening. I listen to some
talks. I also listen to conversations.
Bina : Oh!
Seema : It helps me pay attention and understand the message.
Bina : That’s great!
Seema : Not just that. It has improved my pronunciation skills, modulation and tone of voice. I
now speak with the right expression.
Bina : I think. I should do that too.
Seema : You must also practise it with others. Listening and speaking can help you learn the
structure of sentences too.
Bina : How about reading books?
Seema : That’s an excellent way to learn new words in context. And you can learn the structure
of sentences too.
Bina : Hmm ... I will follow your tips. I want to speak like you.
Seema : Definitely. Start it right away.

Life Skills and Values
Most of the time we want to speak, not listen. But listening is also a part of communication. Listening
skills help you understand what the other person is saying. You can avoid misunderstanding. So,
listen to understand, not to speak.
