PARTS OF THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEMThe mouth, the food pipe, the stomach, the small intestine, the large intestine and the anus make up your digestive system.PROCESS OF DIGESTIONYour mouth is the starting point for your food%u2019s long journey through the digestive system. Even before you begin to eat, when you smell or see or think about food, saliva forms in your mouth. When you eat, the chemicals in the saliva break down the food a little, which makes the food soft and easy to swallow.Your tongue pushes the food around while you chew it with your teeth. Then your tongue pushes the ball of chewed food, called bolus, to the back of your throat. From there, the food goes down a tube called the esophagus (food pipe). The door to the stomach opens and the food reaches your stomach.small intestinestomachmouthtongueYour stomach is the major stop for your food during digestion. The stomach is a pink, muscular bag which expands to hold the food you have eaten. The muscular walls squeeze and churn the food while the lining of your stomach releases acid and other digestive juices that kill any germs in the food and help to break it down into smaller and smaller bits until it turns into a soft liquid. This half-digested food then gets pushed into the small intestine, the next part of your digestive system. The small intestine is a very long, thin coiled tube. Your food spends up to four hours in the small intestine.Let%u2019s now learn what happens there.Arrow-Puffin-4_Semester-1 Science 269%u2022 Your mouth cools or warms up the food before sending it down the food pipe.%u2022 The food remains in the stomach for 4-5 hours.Did you know?
