As the coast is shallow, harbours are not formed but well-developed deltas are formed. The main ports are Chennai, Kolkata and Visakhapatnam.The important rivers are the Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna and the Kaveri. The heavy rainfall in this region is very suitable for the cultivation of rice. This region is known as the Rice Bowl of India. The Western Coastal Plains and Eastern Coastal Plains cover some parts of the states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, West Bengal, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. We have read about some states in the previous chapters. Let us discuss some other states.GujaratGujarat is situated on the west coast of India. It is the main producer of tobacco, cotton and groundnut. One of the most important industries of Gujarat is dairy farming. The products of the famous brand, Amul, are made at Anand in Gujarat.The official language of the state is Gujarati. The people of Gujarat are fond of eating. The popular food items are bhakhri, shaak, khichdi, thepla etc.The Gujarati women wear ghagra choli with odhni and men wear dhoti, short coat and turban. Ras Garba and Dandiya are the famous dances of the state. Navratri festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm. The capital city of Gujarat is Gandhinagar.
