The moisture-laden winds originate in the Indian Ocean and enter India in two branches %u2013 the Arabian Sea branch and the Bay of Bengal branch. The Arabian Sea branch reaches Malabar Coast by 1st June. These monsoon winds move towards the north along the western coast. The Bay of Bengal branch brings rainfall to the Northern Plains. By the mid of July almost every part of the country receives monsoon. The Eastern Coast, the Western Coast and the North-East states receive heavy rainfall from the monsoon winds.India receives three-fourths of the total annual rainfall from the monsoon. The rainfall in India is unevenly distributed. Mawsynram in Meghalaya receives over 800 centimetres of annual rainfall whereas some parts of Rajasthan receive less than 10 centimetres rain in a year. The reason behind this is that the wind loses moisture as it travels away from the sea. The Tamil Nadu coast receives monsoon between November and January. The monsoon plays a great role in agriculture in India. The entire cycle of the crop depends on the arrival of the monsoon. If the monsoon is delayed or remains below average, it causes huge loss to agriculture and the economy of the country.Winter SeasonWinter is the cold season. It extends from mid-November to February. In winter, nights are longer and days are shorter. In the North and Central India, December and January are very cold.MonsoonDistribution of Rainfall in IndiaMawsynram holds the record for the highest average annual rainfall in the world.FactWhich season extends from mid-November to February?Checkpoint
