17. Transport and
Communication
A. TRANSPORT
We all travel from one place to another for various reasons such as
reaching school or college, going to the workplace, visiting a relative or
for a vacation.
We use different means of transport every day for travelling to different
places. Transport carries people and goods.
Did You
Know? Palanquins were a common mode of transportation for
royal and noble people up to the 20th century, before
automobiles became relevant in India. They are still
used in the regions without access to other means of
transport. A palanquin consists of a box carried by four
or six people using two long poles on their shoulders.

How do we travel?
We walk if the place is nearby, or we use a vehicle to travel far away from
our home.
When we have to travel a short distance
we use a cycle, an autorickshaw, a scooter
or a car.
If the place is far away, we take a train or Cycle
an aeroplane. Autorickshaw
The means of transport we choose
depends on the distance to be travelled,
the time and money we spend and the
Scooter
availability of that means of transport.
