Directions

Directions are very important to help us reach a place. We cannot locate a

place if we do not know the directions. There are four directions – East, West,

North and South.

Locating directions

Have you ever seen the sun rise in the morning? The sun rises in the east.

Have you ever seen the sun set in the evening? The sun sets in the west.

When we face the rising sun, we are looking towards the east, the west in

behind us, the south is on our right and the north is on our left. The four

main directions are - North, South, East and West, are known as the cardinal

directions.

Compass

A compass is an instrument that shows directions. It

resembles a watch and has a magnetic needle. The needle

always points towards the north. This helps us to know

the other three directions. We can use a compass to find
