Long, long ago, in a small village, there lived a poor man called Subuddhi. He was
poor, but he was a very kind and helpful man. He tried hard to find some work and
earn some money for his family, but somehow he could never get enough work. At last,
the man made up his mind to go on a long journey in order to earn some money.
Early the next morning, before his wife and children woke up, he left the house. He
walked and walked for many days. He ate fruits and berries off the trees. He drank
from running brooks along the way. At night he spread out a sheet on the ground and
lay down.
