street of the goldsmiths. I make the king’s jewellery. If ever you need some work to be
done, do call on me,” said the man and went his way.
It was now dark and Subuddhi
was tired and hungry. He did
not find anything to eat. So
he spread his sheet on the
ground and went to sleep.
In the morning, Subuddhi
woke up and looked around.
He was too weak to search for
any food. Just then he saw
some movement in the trees.
All at once, his friend, the
monkey, landed close by. The
monkey saw Subuddhi, ran off
and returned shortly afterwards
with some fruits. There were mangoes, grapes, nuts and berries. Subuddhi ate to his
heart’s content. After the meal he told the monkey about his problem. The monkey
said, “Come with me. We shall go and see our friend, the tiger. He may be of some
help.” Subuddhi went with the monkey to the tiger’s cave. The tiger came out of the
cave and greeted his friends.
“Our friend needs some money. Can you help him?” said the monkey. The tiger at once
entered the cave and emerged after a while carrying some gold ornaments.
“I can never forget your help. Take these ornaments as a gift,” said the tiger. “I am sure
you can get a lot of money for it.”
Subuddhi hesitated to take them.
“I didn’t steal them if that’s what you are thinking,” said the tiger. “A few years ago, a
young prince came hunting into the forest. As he was walking along this path, a deadly
snake bit him.
He died almost at once. And these ornaments lay beside him. I am now giving them
to you.”
