The king was overjoyed. He pardoned Subuddhi.
“You are free from today. But tell me honestly, did you know my son?” asked the king.
“No, Your Majesty!” cried Subuddhi. “I’d never do such a thing.”
Subuddhi explained how he had got the ornaments and why he gave them to the
goldsmith.
The king sent for the goldsmith. He fell at the king’s feet begging for mercy. He was
banished from Varanasi.
Subuddhi stayed on in Varanasi for a few days. The king rewarded him with gold coins,
jewels and other priceless gifts. After a week, he was given a grand farewell by the royal
household.
