pockets and took out two small coins. “This is all I have,”
What did the judge say when
he said to the judge. Bholanath told him that he had been
smelling the sweets for a month?
“But how long have you been smelling the sweets?” the

          judge asked.

          “For a month,” replied Bholanath.

“I think you will have to pay for this,” said the judge. “After all, he has spent so much

money to make the sweets. And it is the smell that makes people buy them. So pay the
          price for having enjoyed it.”

All the people in the court were surprised to hear this. “Isn’t it unreasonable to ask a
man to pay for smelling?” they said. Bholanath looked at the judge puzzled. “But I have

no money to give him,” he said.

Now the judge took out some coins from his pocket and gave them to Bholanath.

Manikchand smiled and eagerly held out his hand. But before he could take it, the
judge said to Bholanath, “Now shake the coins near Manikchand’s ears so that he hears

the tinkling of coins. The price for smelling the sweets shall be the sound of money.”

“You’re trying to make me a fool,” said Manikchand angrily.

“So are you,” the judge said. “If there is a price for smelling, then, this is how you’ll get
          paid for it.”

Everyone in the court started laughing. Manikchand felt ashamed of himself. He
                                                                                    begged for forgiveness

                                                                                    and left the court.

                                                                                    “Keep these coins and

                                                                                    buy some sweets for
                                                                                    yourself,” the judge said

                                                                                    to Bholanath. Bholanath
                                                                                    thanked the judge for

                                                                                    having given him justice.
