There was a trader called Manikchand in the city of Agra.

very famous for its tasty sweets and savouries. Many people

came to the shop every day to buy them. Though Manikchand did good business and
earned a lot of money, he was not contented. He wanted more and more. And he never

parted with his money. Even when beggars came to his shop for alms, he would turn
them away with harsh words.

A poor labourer, called Bholanath, lived near Manikchand’s shop. He passed the

shop on his way to work every day. The delicious smell of the sweets filled the air
