PLANTS IN DESERTS You see plants like cactus and palm in deserts. These plants can survive the hot and dry conditions in deserts.cactus date palmcactuswheat rice rubber teakSome cactus species can survive for up to two years without water!Did you know? How does a cactus plant make food without leaves? CheckpointLet us now learn how plants in deserts adapt themselves to their environment. Observe a cactus plant. Does it have leaves? It doesn%u2019t have any. Instead it has spines. It prevents the loss of water from the plant surface. The stem is thick and fleshy because it stores water. The roots are long in order to help them reach out for the water, deep in the ground. All these features help the plant store the little water it gets. Then, how do these plants make food in the absence of leaves? The green, fleshy stem of this plant contains chlorophyll so, it makes food for the plant. PLANTS IN AREAS OF HIGH RAINFALL Plants like rubber, teak, pepper and cashewnut grow in places where there is high rainfall. These plants have lots of leaves. They do not shed their leaves. So, they are called evergreen plants. Some other plants like cotton, rice and sugarcane also grow here.232 Arrow-Puffin-4_Semester-1 Science
