14. Let's Get
Creative
Pottery
Early humans had a nomadic lifestyle. People’s lives changed gradually.
The needs of early people began to grow. They wanted pots for cooking
purposes. They also wanted containers to
store food grains. So, they started making
pots by hand out of clay and dried them in
the sun. But these pots and vessels broke
easily and could not hold food or water.
Later the potter’s wheel was invented to
shape the pots. A well kneaded ball of clay
Potter’s wheel
was placed on it and the wheel was rotated
fast. The potters began to shape the pots
with the help of the fast-rotating wheel. The
pots were sun-dried and baked in a special
baking chamber called the kiln to make them
strong. They could use these pots for a long
time.

The art of making pots in different sizes,
shapes and designs is called pottery. The
pots were also painted in different colours
and designs were drawn on them.
