What did the two
men claim the magic
cloth could do?
“So when you wear the clothes we have sewn for you, you will be able to tell who’s
clever and who’s stupid,” the man said.
“How amazing!” said the emperor.
Then the men said, “You will be the only emperor wearing these clothes. We will not
sew them for anyone else.”
“How wonderful!” said the emperor.
“Well then,” I would like you to make me a new suit in the latest design. And please
begin right away.” The emperor made arrangements for the two men to stay and work
at the palace. He also gave them a lot of money to buy fine silk and gold thread.
The two men in fact were cheats. They could neither weave nor sew. Not a word they
spoke was true.
They took all the money. All day long they sat at the looms and pretended to weave
cloth. The emperor and his family came to watch the work going on. But of course,
they could see no cloth.
But none wished to be called stupid. So the two men pretended to weave and the
emperor and his men pretended that they could see the wonderful cloth.
