After a few days, the two men said that they had finished weaving the cloth. Now they

asked for pearls and diamonds to sew on the dress they were going to make.

For the next few days they pretended to cut and sew the cloth. Finally the two cheats

presented the new clothes to the emperor. Of course, it was only an empty box!

One by one, the emperor’s ministers came to see the new clothes. They could see

nothing. But they didn’t want to be called stupid. So they praised the colour and design.
“It’s the most splendid work I have ever seen,” said one.

“Look at the gold thread. How fine it is!” said another.

How did the emperor
react when he saw the
empty box?

The emperor was very happy and rewarded the two men with more money.

Then he went to his dressing room. The two men were also with him. The emperor took

off his clothes. He asked the two men to help him wear the new clothes. They simply
moved their hands up and down and pretended to help the emperor to wear the new

clothes. The emperor looked into the mirror and saw nothing at all. “I’m indeed stupid
not to be able to see a thing,” he said to himself. When the emperor came out, the

ministers were surprised to find the emperor Swank standing there wearing nothing

at all. But then they said “What a wonderful suit!” The emperor said, “I will wear this
dress tomorrow. I want everyone in my land to see this new dress.” The next day was

the emperor’s birthday. A big party was to be held at the Royal Park. The emperor rode

in an open golden coach, drawn by white horses.
