1. The Village of Beads
Read the passages and answer the questions that follow.
Mundali Village is popularly known as ‘Moti Gaon’ (village of beads). 80% of the people in this
village are involved in bead-related work. Women of this village make beautiful tassels, bracelets,
strings, earrings and wall hangings with beads. Farha and her
daughters earn between `500 and `700 a day by working in
this industry. Akash, a handicraft artist makes decorative items
from beads using lace and jute. He earns close to `1000 a
day. He wants to set up his own manufacturing unit one day.
But this business demands patience and practice with speed.
Stringing tiny beads into thin nylon threads to make intricate
designs cannot be done using machines. People of this village
have picked up a good deal of expertise in beadwork with their
hardwork. This business has brought prosperity and employment to this village. As beadwork comes
under handicraft category, administration also provides the artisans a platform to exhibit their work
and products. These exhibitions are attended by buyers and exporters. This helps the artisans to
showcase their talent to the world.
