2. Floating School of Bangladesh
Read the passage and answer the questions that follow.
In Bangladesh, rising water levels cause floods
regularly in areas inhabited by people. The
frequent floods mean children cannot get to
school regularly. If water levels continue to rise,
this problem is only going to get worse. What
can be done for children who cannot attend
school? One solution is to bring the school to
them.
Floating schools are schools on boats that
travel to the low-lying areas of Bangladesh. Children swim or wade out to the boats and then climb
aboard. The boats are equipped with desks, books and even computers. The computers are powered
by solar energy. This is energy that comes from the sun and is used to create electricity.
Floating school means that even when students' houses are surrounded by water, they can still
attend school. Floating schools may be just the beginning of changes. The man who created this
hopes to create floating stations, floating libraries, floating healthcare centres and even floating
gardens. Since the flooding in Bangladesh is not going to get any better, it’s time to figure out how
to live on water.
