Plant leaves can be classified into two types based on their arrangement of

leaf veins: leaves with a network arrangement and leaves with a straight

          line arrangement.

Veins carry water and minerals to all parts of the

leaf. They also carry food from the leaf to the stem.

How do leaves help the plant?

Leaves help the plants by preparing food. They are known as ‘Kitchen of

the Plant’ or ‘Food Factory of the Plant’ as they prepare food for the plant.

Leaves prepare their food by using air, water and chlorophyll in the

presence of sunlight. When the leaves prepare

food, they also produce oxygen, which is

required for all living things to survive.

Leaves have tiny pores called stomata on

their backside. Plants that grow in water have
stomata on the upper side of their leaves.

Plants need air to live. Air enters the plants

through the stomata. Oxygen, carbon dioxide

and water vapour also come out of the plants

          through the stomata.
