The process by which plants prepare their food
is called photosynthesis. Photo means ‘light’ and
synthesis means ‘putting together’.

Know? Chlorophyll, a green pigment, gives green plants
their colour. Chlorophyll helps in the photosynthesis
process. It absorbs energy from sunlight. This
energy is used by the leaves to produce sugar,
which serve as plant food.

Different types of leaves
Different plants have different kinds of leaves. We can recognise plants by
looking at their leaves.
Leaf patterns
Leaves are of different shape, size, colour, texture and smell.
Shape of the leaves: Leaves of some plants are round, oval or flat. Leaves
of some plants are needle-shaped or triangular shaped.
