12. Houses now
and then
Houses were built as humans began to live a settled life. They built houses based
on their needs, using materials readily available to them. Bamboo, straw, grass,
leaves, and mud were commonly used materials since they were easily available.
People used new and better materials to build their houses over time.
How are the houses changing with time?
Over time, houses have been changing their form and style. People’s housing styles
changed depending on climatic, economic, and social factors.

Traditional Houses
Traditional houses had designs based on the people’s culture. In the olden days
houses used to have traditional symbols and paintings. They had high ceilings for
better air circulation. There was a lot of open space in and around the houses.
Big windows and ventilators were provided in all rooms to allow free flow of
fresh air and sunlight. The houses had only one common bathroom that was
shared by all family members.
