6. Plants and their
Adaptations
Plants are found everywhere on the Earth. Different places have different
environmental conditions, soil etc. For example, a cactus plant grows in a hot
desert whereas a lotus plant grows in pond water.

Plants adjust to their surroundings to meet their needs. The plant’s growth is
directly affected by its environment. The natural environment or place where
plants survive is called their habitat.
The process by which a plant adjusts to live in its environment is called
adaptation.
Plants are divided into two groups based on the habitats in which they grow –
Terrestrial plants and Aquatic plants.
Adaptations in terrestrial plants
The plants that grow on land are called terrestrial plants. Land has different
features like hilly areas, plains, coastal areas, deserts, marshy areas etc. Each of
these have different climatic conditions.
