Kantha – The Quilted Embroidery
Kantha, a kind of embroidered quilt, originated in Bengal as a technique to recycle
used cloth. It has evolved into an art form in which women embroider images
such as trees, lotuses, and fish onto fabrics using the running thread. Kantha,
traditionally created by village women, is making its way into high fashion. It is
still a significant folk art of Bengal, portraying the lives and traditions of Bengali
women.
