Fossil Fuels
Plants and animals that died millions of years ago were buried deep under
the soil. The hardened remains of these plants and animals are called fossils.
Fossils of plants and animals both on land and in water have been found. The
dead remains of plants and animals lying on the ground were covered with
sand, mud and water to form a hard substance. After a long time, minerals
from the earth’s surface seeped into these hard substances and slowly turned
them into rocks.
Coal, petroleum, and natural gas are called fossil fuels as they form from the
buried remains of dead plants and animals.
Did You Petroleum is also known as crude oil. Crude oil is taken out of the ground and sent to
Know? a refinery, where various components are processed to create petroleum products that
can be used. These petroleum products include fuel (gasoline), lubricating oils, waxes,

Conservation of Natural Resources
Natural resources should be used very carefully as we
cannot replace them. Preserving and taking care of
natural resources for the benefit of all living things is
called conservation of natural resources.
Natural resources provide all of the needs we need to

Some resources, like small plants, can be regenerated
quickly after being used.
