Some newborn babies have cleft lips. A cleft of the lip or
palate occurs when a newborn is born with a gap in the

upper lip or the roof of the mouth (the palate). It has been
present since birth. The gap exists because pieces of the
baby’s face did not unite properly during growth in the

mother’s womb.
