Terrestrial Animals
Animals that live on the surface of the land or in
burrows and holes under the ground are called
terrestrial animals.
Elephants live in dense forests. Elephant
Tigers, lions, giraffes and deer live in grasslands.
Rabbits make burrows or holes under the land and
live in them.
Rats and snakes live in the holes.
Camels, ostriches and sand cats live in deserts. Lion Giraffe
Polar bears, arctic foxes and penguins live in extremely cold regions. They can
survive only in cold weather.

Know? In winter, certain animals go into deep sleep due to a lack of food. This inactivity is
known as hibernation or winter sleep. Polar bears, snakes, frogs etc. hibernate. Some
animals become inactive in the heat to conserve water in their bodies. This inactivity is
known as aestivation or summer sleep. Earthworms, crocodiles, salamanders etc. go
through aestivation.
Aquatic Animals
Animals that live only in water are called aquatic animals. Fish live among aquatic
plants. Starfish live on rocks in the sea. Octopus lives between the rocks. Whales and
sharks live in seas and oceans. Some aquatic animals live in corals.
